Following the success of the Baltimore Detoxification Project, John Travolta decided to explore the possibilities for bringing detoxification to firefighters in Ocala, the town near his home in Central Florida.

A series of meetings with local officials revealed that the exposures and health issues affecting local firefighters were similar to those faced by firefighters in other communities where detoxification facilities had been established. The possibility of bringing the program to the community was warmly received, and the Ocala Detoxification Project was launched.

In short order, the project reached its goal of providing services at no cost to those in the local community who felt that work-related exposures had reduced their quality of life and ability to do their jobs effectively.
